March on Washington for Gun Control

Gun-violence survivor, March organizer, actor/playwright Paul Oakley Stovall

Now 43 and a successful actor and playwright (his play debuts on Broadway this fall), Paul got a rough start to adulthood: “I was shot in both my legs. I have the scars and infrequent but debilitating shooting pains (nerve damage) to this day. At 21 years old, I found myself to be an gay, crippled African American,” said Paul. (Scroll down to see his full story.) Career highlights include serving as advance associate for First Lady Michelle Obama during the first Obama presidential campaign. He also wrote the play Immediate Family, which was directed by Phylicia Rashad and is aiming for Broadway in Fall 2013 with Tony award winning producers Paul Boskind, Ruth and Steve Hendel.

Arena Stage's artistic director, Molly Smith, and Suzanne Blue Star Boy, an American Indian activist, launched the effort and are overseeing every aspect of the March. They envision a peaceful, spiritual event honoring victims of gun violence and calling for tighter regulation of guns and ammunition.

The March on Washington for Gun Control is planned for 10 a.m. Jan. 26 on the National Mall.

According to an event notice posted on Patch:

"The March on Washington for Gun Control, a citizen-activist-led peaceful, silent procession along the Mall in honor of gun-violence victims and to support stricter gun regulations. Organized by Arena Stage’s artistic director, Molly Smith, along with Suzanne Blue Star Boy, American Indian activist, marchers will gather at 10 a.m. at Union Square (between 3rd St NW and the reflecting pool just west of the U.S. Capitol), then proceed on Pennsylvania Avenue to Constitution Avenue, concluding with speeches and performances at the Washington Monument."
