Police Awards Recognize Second District Police Officer, Commander
The second police district covers Georgetown, Glover Park and other portions of Northwest DC.
Officers from the Second District Metropolitan Police Department earned high praise from their peers and chief at a recent award ceremony. Local Officer Antonial Atkins was recognized as Officer of the Year for all of D.C.
Atkins emailed the Georgetown block captains, telling them that he shares his award, "with the entire community at large and the police officers that have done things to make Georgetown a fantastic place to work."
Additionally, Second District Commander Michael Reese received high praise from Chief Cathy Lanier for leading the police district with the greatest reduction in crime in the past year, according to the block captain email.
Under his leadership the second district had a 10 percent reduction in crime overall. That includes a 21 percent reduction in assaults with a deadly weapon, 42 percent reduction in burglaries and a 38 percent reduction in stolen autos.
Atkins was also one of two recipients of the 2012 Joe Pozell Public Safety Award from the Georgetown Business Association.
