Bikeshare Officially Comes to Georgetown

The new regional bikeshare program officially has a station in Georgetown at K St. Now if only there were bikes to go with it.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) along with other officials rolled out the bikeshare program officially on Sept. 20. Now Georgetown joins the ranks of neighborhoods to see the solar powered bike station sprout up over night. The first location at K St. is now installed, and waiting for residents and, at the moment, bikes.

The system will have 100 stations in D.C., 14 in Arlington and a total of 1100 bikes. Stations have been installed throughout the region and all locations should be operational by late October 2010, according to DDOT.

Georgetown Metropolitan rightly reported that the K St. bikeshare station would appear this week; GM also said the planned station on Wisconsin Ave. at the canal should arrive next week. Keep your eyes peeled.

Membership options include daily, monthly or annual rates. Join the program here

I've been a member for a week now, using mostly the stations between Judiciary Square and Dupont. I should have some time on my evening commute today to drop a bike off at the Washington Harbor station, if the CaBi folks don't get there first.

Still waiting on the planned station up at Hardy Middle School, though!

The current station is in the alley/driveway between Washington Harbor and the House of Sweden (roughly 30th and K).

DDOT plans to put in another station on Wisconsin (above the canal) next week, and another station near Hardy Middle School (across the street from the Social Safeway).

There are apparently negotiations about a fourth station near G.U.'s campus, but it's unclear whether/where that will happen--a couple of locations have already been ruled out.

Jacques, DDOT Spokesperson John Lisle said the bikes should have arrived at the spot yesterday and you are right on with the location. I haven't been by to check yet. They are still negotiating the GU site, but hopefully the Canal station and Hardy will pop up soon!
