Champion of Georgetown Waterfront Park Honored with Plaza

A ceremony to dedicate the "Senator Charles H. Percy Plaza" at the gateway to the park will be Thursday at 4 p.m.

Georgetown residents and supporters of the creation of the Georgetown Waterfront Park will gather Thursday to dedicate the entrance to the park as the “Senator Charles H. Percy Plaza”. The event will begin at 4 p.m. and is open to the public.

“The Georgetown Waterfront Park would not be here today without the commitment and support of Senator Percy and his family,” Bob vom Eigen, president of Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park, said in a press release.

The late senator was a strong supporter of the creation of a waterfront park in Georgetown. The plaza in his name is located at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and K Street, NW.

The Georgetown Waterfront Park was completed in September 2011, through funding from the National Park Service, the DC Government, and private donors, including Senator Percy and his family, according to the press release. The District invested about $4.5 million in the park, which was matched with private funding.
