Comcast Working with Neighbors After Complaints

Comcast's 'small-refrigerator-sized' utility boxes are a point of contention among Georgetown residents.

Comcast, the District Department of Transportation and Georgetown neighborhood leaders are in discussions about the "small-refrigerator-sized" green utility boxes that have recently appeared on street corners in the historic district.

At last week's Advisory Neighborhood Commission, Commissioner Tom Birch said the fact that the boxes appeared on street corners without any architectural or design review made him "livid."

"This business is coming into our community and just making an aestheitic wreck of what we try to preserve in the historic district," said Birch last week.

Initially, the ANC reported having problems getting Comcast to return their calls and emails about the boxes.

According to online news site The Wrap.com, Comcast is now working with 'interested parties' to find “mutually beneficial solutions as we continue to provide Georgetown customers with our innovative products and services.”

Though Comcast told The Wrap that the company believed it had properly obtained the permits to install the boxes, the ANC is hopeful that conversations will lead to historic review for such permits in the future and an alternative solution to the large structures.
