Comer & Co. Sets Up Shop in Georgetown

Comer & Co. will open a Georgetown shop this summer in the former Sixteen Fifty Nine location.

The antique store, Comer & Co. is coming to Georgetown and will occupy the space .

Comer & Co. offers "a fresh eclectic mix of furniture and art ranging from eighteenth century English and continental furniture up to mid-century modern. The emphasis is antiques for the way we live today,” explains Fred Comer, owner of Comer & Co.

Comer and his partner Mark Manoff are “native Washingtonians and have lived within the area for over 30 years,” says Comer, and their main location is in the Chesapeake Bay village of Kilmarnock, VA.

The two were looking to expand. A friend, who shopped at Sixteen Fifty Nine and saw that it was going out of business, suggested that they take a look at location. The rest was history.

They are doing some polishing to the location including enhancing the garden and re-painting the existing neon green exterior to a vibrant "palm beach pink."

The inside will showcase inventive ways to integrate antiques in the modern home. The two floors of the shop will imitate that of a “typical Georgetown townhouse and will have the feeling of a private home" says Comer.

"We really try to layer the shop. Each room will have a different flavor or feeling,” he explains.

They have already hired three people to help manage the shop, and Comer will be back and forth between the two locations.

“I really want to be on site and on the property in the first year. Things change daily. You’ve got to keep it fresh. The beauty of having multiple stores is to keep rotating the product and keep things fresh,” says Comer.

The official Grand Opening is set for Monday, May 16. The event will feature a book signing by interior designer and writer Charlotte Moss.
