Creative DC Moms Winter Festival Celebrates Motherly Ingenuity
An ode to the urban mother.
Entering parenthood is like entering a whole other stratosphere in the universe. It’s inexplicable and nothing, except experience, can really prepare you for it.
Being an urban mom is like being part of a sisterhood. Since entering this sisterhood ten months ago, I’ve met some incredible women. Some of them work outside the home and some have chosen to leave their high-powered careers to stay at home. ALL of them are creative, intelligent and resourceful people. Many of these women have ditched the desk and started their own businesses.
I decided it was high time that these “‘mommypreneurs” got the credit they deserve and took it upon myself to organize a festival bringing some of these local talented women together.
That festival has finally come to fruition Saturday, February 5th from 3-6 p.m. The 1st Annual Creative DC Moms Winter Festival will take place at Lil Omm Yoga, a family studio owned by local mom and awesome yogi, Pleasance Lowengard Silicki.
The festival will be a marketplace for unique gifts, accessories, art, food and crafts. All of the exhibitors are imaginative moms, in the DC area, that celebrate their ingenuity through their creations and businesses.
Looking for children’s clothes and fabrics? Our sassy seamstresses from Charm Stitch, Collie Ollie's Children's Boutique and Wiggle + Scoot have everything you need to dress your little diva. And if you need to decorate her room or plan her first birthday, look no further than Ushie Baby.
Transform your dining room into a petit bistro in France and let Linens of Provence bring the beauty and elegance of this region into your home.
Is your playroom a mess?! Rosey's Urban Style can show you how to organize your life from top to bottom in a jiffy.
Naturally, women seek out jewelry to decorate their bodies and art to adorn their walls. The Winter Festival is the perfect place to find all sorts of pieces from the preppiest to the most original. Artist and jewelers include Adams Art Production, Casimira, Joy of Jewelry, MiSHi Designs, Starland by Hand and Stella & Dot.
And of course, what would a festival be without food? We’ll have sweets from El Ceibo Chocolates and Marisol Cakes. Sweet Bites Creamery will be on hand with the newest fad to hit the DC farmer’s market scene - hand-crafted, all natural ice cream sandwiches! No time to cook? No sweat, Urban Tastes will do it for you!
Another thing every festival needs is a little music. Join children’s performer, Marsha Goodman-Wood, as she kicks off this special day with some tunes guaranteed to make everyone from the youngest shopper to great grandma clap her hands.
From 4 to 5 p.m., mom and author Aviva Goldfarb, will sign copies of her new cookbook, SOS! The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families.
And if all of the above isn’t incentive enough, we will be giving away tons of gifts and prizes. Georgetown’s own, Urban Chic is donating a shopping party for 15 people, including bubbly and treats as well as a 15 percent yearlong discount to Urban Chic for the winner of the item. Apple Seed Maternity & Baby Boutique, of Old Town, has also donated a gift certificate for a lucky winner.
A signed copy of Baby Love: Healthy, Easy. Delicious Meals for Your Baby and Toddler by local mom and author, Norah O'Donnell will also be raffled off! And the Happy Baby company, the newest stars of American Express, will be giving away tons of goodies for both babies and moms!
So join Patch in their new initiative, the Patch Mom’s Council and head to the First Annual Creative DC Moms Winter Festival to support YOUR local urban mom!
