D.C. Celebrates Pride Month in June

Residents can participate in various activities celebrating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride throughout the month.

Tuesday, Mayor Vincent C. Gray officially recognized June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month. The 2011 Pride Parade will take place on Saturday, June 11 at 5:30 p.m.

“Pride season highlights our ability to come together as One City and celebrate the diversity of our vibrant LGBT community and re-affirm our commitment to equality for all people,” the Mayor said.

Tonight, Washington Blade editor Kevin Naff will interview Mayor Vincent Gray on LGBT issues. The mayor will also answer questions submitted by the public. This marks the Mayor's first formal interview with Washington’s gay press since taking office.

The interview will take place at the John A. Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW and is open to the public. The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the interview at 6:30 and a public question and answer session at 7 p.m.

The Capital Pride program organizes a slew of activities in early June, culminating in the parade that traditionally begins in Dupont Circle just over the P Street bridge from Georgetown. The parade staging area is at 22nd and P Streets. The judging area is at the Whole Foods in Logan Circle.

Several local organizations are sponsoring or participating in this year's parade. The is an event sponsor. Georgetown Day School and United Methodist Church are both participating in the parade.
