DC Deploys Snow Team, Winter Weather Advisory in Effect

Georgetown may get some snow overnight.

The District Snow Team will deploy about 190 plows to be on their routes starting at 10 p.m. in anticipation of up to an inch of accumulated snow that could fall overnight. The snow team is a joint force supported by the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the District Department of Transportation.

“Unlike previous snow events this season, roadway temperatures are well below freezing so snow likely will be on the ground when the morning rush hour gets underway,” DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. said in a press release.

The service issued a winter weather advisory that is in effect for the DC region from midnight until 9 a.m. Thursday. Temperatures will be in the upper teens and lower 20s, with winds climbing up to 10 to 20 mph.

The Snow Team will pre-treat major streets, bridges and elevated structures with a brine/beet juice mixture to help prevent snow from sticking to the pavement, according to the press release.

“We want motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to be especially cautious as they travel throughout the District in the early morning. This is important since so many people leave the house for work and school before daybreak,” Howland said.
