Editor's Notebook: Closing Schools, Ice Skating and More

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Georgetown Patch.

Washington Harbour Ice Rink Opens Nov. 19, Grand Opening Dec. 1

After months of anticipation the new ice rink at the Georgetown waterfront will open quietly on Nov. 19, waiting to celebrate with true fanfare Dec. 1. The "Winter on the Water" event from 4 to 7 p.m. complements the Swedish Christmas Bazaar at the neighboring House of Sweden from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. the same day. Also check out our photo gallery of the rink's construction over the course of a month.

Closures Proposed for Two Ward 2 Schools

This week D.C. Public Schools announced a list of 20 schools that could close at the end of the school year, including Garrison Elementary and Francis Stevens Education Campus.

Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans told Patch, "We need to close schools. We need to close lots of schools." But he then criticized the proposed closures at Ward 2's Garrison and raised concerns about appropriate use at Francis Stevens.
