Ward 2's Republican Population Up from 2008

Georgetown and Ward 2 both tend to be a bit more politically conservative than other parts of the District, at least when it comes to presidential elections, according to data from the D.C. Board of Elections.

But Ward 2 is statistically not the most Republican-leaning part of the city—Ward 3 retains that title for another year.

The most recently available voter registration data reveals just 6.45 percent of voters are registered as Republicans in the District. The GOP has even lost members in Wards 1, 3, 4, 7 and 8, the Washington Post reported this month.

About 12.8 percent of Ward 2 registered (6,013 of 47,287) voters are registered Republicans, according to District voter registration data from the end of September. This is up from 12.5 percent of voters in 2008, data from the close of voter registration that year reveals. 

About 13.3 percent of Ward 3 voters (7,722 of 57,662) are registered Republicans, according to District voter registration data from the end of September. That's down from 14.9 percent in 2008.

District Remains a Democrat Stronghold

Across the District, President Barack Obama won with 92.46 percent of the votes in 2008. Sen. John McCain received 6.53 percent of the vote, with the remaining 1 percent or so going to Independent and write-in candidates.

In 2004, Sen. John Kerry took 89.18 percent of the votes across the District, and President George W. Bush received 9.34 percent. In 2000, then-Vice President Al Gore received 85.15 percent of the votes and Bush received 8.95 percent of the votes.

Though Wards 2 and 3, like the rest of the District, are largely filled with Democrat-leaning residents, a higher percentage of people in Wards 2 and 3 have voted for the Republican presidential candidate in the past few elections as compared to the rest of the city.

Georgetown residents gave a strong showing at the Republican National Convention this summer in Tampa. The D.C. Republican Delegation has 16 delegates and 16 alternates. Four Georgetowners were delegates and two more were alternates this year. More of D.C.'s delegates and alternates live in Georgetown's 20007 Zip Code than any other in the city.
