Georgetown May Get Two New Bikeshare Stations

Latest proposed expansion of Capital Bikeshare includes two new docks in Georgetown.

Georgetown could get two more Capital Bikeshare stations in the new year, according to a proposed expansion list released by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Monday. DC currently has 138 bikeshare stations.

The new Georgetown stations are proposed for 34th and Water Streets NW and the east side of Wisconsin Avenue and O Street NW. The two additional stations would bring Georgetown's total to seven.

“These new locations will mean a 40 percent increase in the number of CaBi stations in DC,” said DDOT Director Terry Bellamy in a press release. “Combined with new stations in Arlington, Alexandria and soon in Montgomery County, we’re building a robust and truly regional system.”

The new stations will be installed between January and March 2013.

According to the press release, DDOT chose its list of 54 new station locations from a longer list of 78 locations suggested by the public since the system first launched over two years ago.

New locations were chosen based on factors like "population density, employment density, bike-to-work rate, proximity to metro, and proximity to other Bikeshare stations," according to DDOT.

“We need to balance the desire to expand into new areas with the need for more docks and bikes in existing areas, particularly downtown, where demand is heaviest,” said Chris Holben, DDOT Project Manager for Capital Bikeshare, in a press release. “Basically, for every ‘expansion’ station we also need more spaces downtown to keep up with demand.”

Love the O Street one, think that Water Street is less for Georgetowners and more for people using the Capital Crescent Trail. Would love to see stations near Rose Park, Georgetown Public Library, Volta Park, and GU Hospital in future expansion rounds.

Also more investment from GU in working to get more stations on/near campus, which would improve the network for all in the neighborhood.

A station near Rose Park, on either side of the bridge from Dupont, would make a world of sense. As would the library suggestion. I'll have to ask GU what/if any plans they have to press for more Bikeshare near campus. Thanks for your thoughts! -Shaun

I live at 27th and Q Streets NW and am disappointed that there continues to be a hole in this area, which fits so many of DDOT's factors, including high population with a number of apartment building and proximity to other Bikeshare stations. For example, the earlier proposed spot at Rock Creek and P Street would have been a great addition.
