Georgetown Hosts Second Annual Father's Day 8k Race

The Georgetown Running Company race team is holding the race along the C&O Canal Towpath.

This father’s day, the Georgetown Running Company is offering you one more way to spend time with dad: by running with him along the .

The Second Annual Father’s Day 8k on June 19 will not begin until 6:30 p.m. so people can spend the morning with their families, said one of the race directors and running team member, Jake Klim.

“It gives dads the morning to sleep in, have brunch, golf or spend time with their families. And then they can come out and race in the evening to push the weekend a little bit,” Klim said.

The race is the final DC event for Men’s Health Week, and has the GRC partnering with a number of other organizations, including Back on My Feet DC, Skinny Water and Georgetown Cupcake. At the end of the race there will be 750 cupcakes donated by the local shop, Klim said.

“We’re trying to make this a real father’s day event. We want it to be more family oriented,” Klim said.

The race team is taking steps to achieve a family feel by making the race open to all age groups and even including a Kid’s Kilometer Fun Run.

Kilm said that the profit’s of this race go to support the race team, a group of about 35 men and 6 to 10 women, who are mostly post-collegiate runners hoping to continue competing on a semi-professional level.

“Some are trying to qualify for the Olympics. 90 percent of the team ran in college. They’re probably the best runners in DC,” Klim said.

According to the race website www.fathersday8k.com, entries will be open until the day of the race and all participants will receive a t-shirt. Last year, the race had just over 200 entries. This year they are hoping for 250 to 300 participants, Klim said.

After the race any participants over the age of 21 are invited to Chadwick’s for happy hour.

Check out the team’s blog for more information on them, and the race website for details on how to enter.

Race entry fees are $30 until the day before the race, and $40 on race day.
