Georgetown Oral History Event Monday

The Citizens Association of Georgetown will host an event highlighting participants in Georgetown's oral history project.

The community is invited to hear Georgetown's history from those who have lived it at 7 p.m. Monday at Dumbarton United Methodist Church, 3133 Dumbarton St. NW. The Citizens Association of Georgetown (CAG) is hosting a "Living History" evening featuring six Georgetowners sharing a few of their recollections about the neighborhood's not-so-distant past.

Georgetowners Tom Birch, Kevin Delany, Ed Emes, Cooby Greenway, Selwa Roosevelt, and Ann Satterthwaite will speak at the event and have all participated in CAG's oral history project. The project is a series of one-on-one interviews about life in Georgetown between CAG volunteers and long-time or one-time residents.

The oral histories focused on "growing up in or moving to Georgetown, pursuing careers here, raising families, building businesses, entertaining, renovating houses and more," according to the event notice.

Here's an excerpt of a CAG oral history interview between Ann Satterthwaite (interviewee) and Catherine Habanananda (interviewer):

Ann:  I am an old timer. I have long been interested in the community of Georgetown. And I will say that I feel as the real estate values of property in Georgetown have gone up our sense of community has gone down.
Catherine:  How so…?
Ann:  When I came here in the 60s and the 70s, we had a far more diverse population. The people who had smaller houses and lesser incomes have been priced out in that they have been offered such extraordinary high values for their property, they could not help accept them, and so there is a much more homogeneous community now economically speaking.

You can hear more from Satterthwaite and others during the program Monday.  It begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a dessert reception at 8 p.m. at Dumbarton United Methodist Church.
