Georgetown Political Donors Giving Much Less in '12

Contributions still many times the national average by ZIP code.

While political contributions out of Georgetown so far during the 2012 election cycle amount to only one-third of what was donated four years ago, contributions made here are still significantly more than the national average — about 132 times as much as the average ZIP code nationwide.

Political contributions by ZIP code available at OpenSecrets.org show that collectively Georgetowners in the 20007 ZIP Code have given about $2.96 million so far this election cycle. That’s a huge drop from the $9.16 million contributed four years ago.

Much of the difference might be accounted by the fact President Barack Obama is running uncontested for his party’s nomination. The Obama-Clinton rivalry drew voters, and their wallets, out in droves during the last election cycle.

The two biggest individual donors in Georgetown, interestingly have given to Republican PACs. Robert Pence has given some $250,000 to the Restore Our Future PAC and C. Boyden Gray has given $50,000 to Jon Huntsman's Our Destiny PAC.

If you look at contributions given directly to candidates (excluding PACs), the break down is a little different, but not much:

Candidate Total Raised Barack Obama (D) $285,077 Mitt Romney (R) $114,925 Jon Huntsman (R) $18,237 Ron Paul (R) $6,402 Rick Perry (R) $5,500 Newt Gingrich (R) $4,150 Tim Pawlenty (R) $2,000 Herman Cain (R) $1,860 Gary Johnson (R) $1,000 Rick Santorum (R) $250

Total contributions to Republican candidates from Georgetown amount to $154,324, less than half of the contributions to Democrat, President Obama.

The D.C. Primary is Apr. 3. Republicans Newt Gingrich, Jon Hunstman, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney will appear on the ballot. Rick Santorum will not. According to the AP, the D.C. Republican Committee Chairman Bob Kabel has endorsed Romney.
