Georgetown Student Among Three Arrested in Cairo

Derrik Sweeney, 19, is an undergraduate student at Georgetown University who has been studying abroad at the American University in Cairo.

 

A 19-year-old Georgetown University student was among the three American students arrested for their role in protests in Cairo, Egypt. Derrik Sweeney of Jefferson City, Mo. is studying abroad at the Ameircan University in Cairo.

The University released the following statement:

Georgetown University has been notified by the American University in Cairo that a Georgetown student, Derrik Sweeney, who is studying at the American University in Cairo, has been detained in Egypt. Georgetown University officials have been in communication with Derrik’s family. Georgetown University officials are also in touch with American University in Cairo officials, the U.S. State Department and embassy officials.

In an interview with CBS Radio news, Sweeney's father Kevin said about his son, "He's a 19-year-old who got caught up in something, and I hope they release him."
