Get Out: Concerts in the Park, Taste of Arlington and More

Needs ideas to get your weekend going? Look no further.

 

1. Concerts in the Park

When/Where: Beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday at Volta Park, 1555 34th St. NW, Washington, D.C. 

Why Go: This is the 10th year of Concerts in the Park and the 2012 season promises to be better than ever. Sunday, look for music from Georgetown’s own amazing singer and songwriter, Rebecca McCabe, plus balloons from Georgetown Patch, cupcakes from Sprinkles and much more! The theme is pink and green and there's a prize for the most inspired pink-and-green outfit.

Pricing: Free!

2. The 25th Annual Taste of Arlington

When/Where: Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday on Wilson Boulevard in front of Ballston Common Mall in Arlington.

Why Go: Why not go? This annual street festival features live entertainment, children's activities and more than 35 restaurants. Sponsored by the Ballston Business Improvement District, some proceeds will benefit the Virginia Hospital Center, the Arlington Community Foundation and Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic. Pricing: Admission is free, but tickets are required to eat and drink. Ticket books are $30 and include eight taste tickets. One taste ticket is good for one taste or one drink. Ticket books will be available on-site until 3 p.m. Sunday.

3. 2012 Turtle Trot 5K

When/Where: Check in at 9 a.m. Saturday; the race begins at 10 a.m. It's at Lower Bluemont Park, 329 N. Manchester St., Arlington.

Why Go: Benefits help injured turtles and other wildlife at Long Branch Nature Center get medical attention and shelter until they are strong enough to be released back into the wild, according to a flier promoting the event. Plus, booths, crafts and a real turtle race follow!

4. Jackson Art Center Open Studios

When/Where: Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Jackson Art Center, 3048½ R St. NW, Washington, D.C.

Why Go: Visit 30 artists with studios in a 19th century former school in the heart of Georgetown! Each spring the center opens its workspaces to the public for one afternoon. Meander through studios and view paintings, sculptures, photographs, pottery and more. Enjoy light refreshments and live music as you browse.

Pricing: Free!

5. World Children's Choir Voices of Spring Concert

When/Where: 6 p.m. (reception), 7 to 9:30 p.m. (performance) Saturday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 4250 N. Glebe Road, Arlington.

Why Go: This concert features classical music by Mozart, Vivaldi and others, plus folk and contemporary songs from Honduras, Ireland, China and the United States, African drumming and Broadway showtunes. Proceeds go to the choir's scholarship fund for low-income children.

Pricing: $30 (family), $20 (adults), $10 (seniors, students). Admission is free for children under 3. Call 703-883-0920 for more information.
