Griffin Market Sign Officially Removed

Stachowski's installed its own sign in the former Griffin Market space

A small evolution in neighborhood history happened quietly last week when Stachowski's installed its own sign at the corner of 28th and P Streets, removing the last traces of Griffin Market.

Stachowski's opened at 1425 28th Street in the first week of May and has generated buzz from local publications like The Georgetown Metropolitan and larger D.C. institutions like Washingtonian.

The Griffin Market has since set down roots in its new home in Beaufort,  S.C. and locals have quickly taken note. Recently author and novelist Pat Conroy wrote his first ever restaurant review, which featured Laura and Riccardo Bonini's Griffin Market.

Until last week, the green sign with gold and white lettering was the last reminder of the neighborhood favorite that closed its Georgetown doors at the corner of 28th and P Streets in February 2011. Now a black sign with cream-colored lettering announces the latest addition to the corner space.

Stachowski's is already making friends among former Griffin patrons, several of whom have told Patch great things about the fresh-made sandwiches.

Stachowksi's is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Would the owner(s) of either Griffin Market sign donate one to the DC Public Library's Peabody Room, the special collections of Georgetown neighborhood history?

As I wrote this story, I wondered to myself, "Did Jerry McCoy manage to snag that sign for the library?" Here's hoping Stachowski's held onto the signs!
