In Georgetown, a 'Bike Hub', Every Day is Bike to Work Day

Georgetown hosted its first-ever Bike to Work Day pit stop at Wisconsin Avenue and K Street Friday morning.

Several hundred cyclists coming from the Capital Crescent Trail, Potomac Parkway trail and more filed through the Georgetown Bike to Work Day pit stop Friday morning for DC's Bike to Work Day celebration.

"Here in Georgetown we are at the hub, between the wonderful Capital Crescent Trail, the Potomac Parkway trail, the Rock Creek trail, near the L Street cycle track. So this is a center for cycling and we at the BID are going to work to make it safer," Jonathon Kass, the BID’s Transportation Director, said to a group of cyclists Friday morning.

Kass said on a typical morning recently starting at 8:45 he counted about 400 cyclists an hour passing through Water Street in Georgetown.

Among other vendors supporting cycling were Bank of Georgetown, handing out water bottles, and Baked and Wired, fueling-up cyclists with their reknowned "hippy crack" granola mix.

McLean resident Paul Wood was enjoying some coffee at the pit stop on his way to work downtown Friday. Wood said his route over the Chain Bridge and along the Capital Crescent Trail is the "quickest way" for him to commute.

"It's actually kind of hard to believe they haven't had one before," said Wood about the Georgetown pit stop.

He said he used to stop off in Rosslyn, but not this year.

"This is the best I've been to," he added.
