Leaf collection begins this week in Georgetown. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will pass through each neighborhood in the city at least twice for two weeks, according to a DPW press release.

Georgetown's alotted weeks are Nov. 5 through Nov. 17 and again later Dec. 3 through Dec. 15.

Glover Park and the Palisades area will have leaf collection Nov. 19 through Dec. 1 and Dec. 17 through Dec. 29.

DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  called leaf collection his agency's "most labor-intensive operation" because it involves some 200 personnel working six days out of seven.

Here are some leaf collection tips from the DPW press release:

• Look up your street’s collection schedule in the leaf collection brochure or at http://leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/.
• Rake leaves into the treebox the weekend before your street’s collection cycles.  If you don’t have a treebox, leaves should be placed adjacent to the curb but NOT in the gutter or the street.
• Please – leaves only! Tree limbs, bricks, dirt, rocks, etc., will damage the equipment and delay collections. 
• If you choose to bag your leaves, place the bags in the treebox or next to the trash/recycling container(s).
• Drive slowly around our crews’ work area so no one gets hurt.
