Mara Takes Georgetown, Glover Park, Bonds Wins DC

Anita Bonds wins the night and the DC Charter Amendment passes.

Georgetown and Glover Park voters favored Republican Patrick Mara, followed closely by Democrat Elissa Silverman in the special election, but interim Councilwoman Anita Bonds, also a Democrat, won the night in DC. Less than 10 percent of registered voters voted in the election, according to unofficial numbers.

Bonds won in unofficial results with 32.19 percent of the District-wide vote, followed closely by Silverman with 27.55 percent and Mara with 22.79 percent.

There were seven candidates on the ballot, six of whom were eligible for votes once Michael Brown bowed out. They were vying to fill the seat vacated when Councilman Phil Mendelson became Council Chairman.

Bonds has been serving at the interim member of the District Council since January. Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans endorsed her to remain in the position.

At Georgetown's two precincts, 5 and 6, Mara garnered 53.68 and 57.63 percent of the vote respectively, according to unofficial results. Silverman came in second with 20.29 and 21.05 percent at each Georgetown voting location.

In Glover Park at precinct 11 Mara overtook Silverman 40.92 to 32.45 percent.

Turnout was low throughout the District. In Glover Park 9.27 percent of registered voters came out Tuesday. In Georgetown's precinct 5, 10.17 percent of voters cast ballots. Precinct 6 was the worst of the three that Patch monitored, with just 6.66 percent of registered voters voting.

The DC Charter Amendment on budget autonomy passed with 83.09 percent of voters Tuesday voting "yes."
