Mayor Gray Reacts to Allegations of Accepting Cash Contributions Exceeding the Legal Limit

The Washington Post first reported on the suspicious donations.

District of Columbia Campaign Finance rules prohibit cash donations in excess of $25. Mayor Vincent Gray received over 200 money order donations, which have a higher legal limit, and according to the Washington Post these money orders are actually converted cash contributions used to get around the cap.

Mayor Gray released a statement today, reacting to the allegations in the Post.

"The story published in today’s Post raises serious questions about my mayoral campaign. I regret that unresolved issues from the campaign continue to surface," said Gray in a press release.

Gray continues, saying his campaign was a "grass roots" effort that required him to place significant trust in those working on his behalf.

He distances himself, in a way, from any impropriety and reminds residents that he personally called for the investigation into his campaign when the initial allegations arose months ago.

"But obviously, if mistakes were made, the campaign should be held accountable," he said in the release.
