Men's Haberdashery, H.L. Poling & Sons, Coming to Georgetown

The men's store will take over the former Govinda Gallery location.

H.L. Poling & Sons, a men's haberdashery, hopes to open very near the Georgetown University campus at 1227 34th St., NW in Spring 2013, according to the new store's website. The space was formerly home to Govinda Gallery.

The company's Twitter account description describes H.L. Poling & Sons as, "Georgetown's newest men's haberdashery, opening February, 2013. Old Ivy for Modern Times."

According to a company description listed on their Vimeo page, the Georgetown location is the Drew Poling's "continuation" of his grandfather H.L. Polings' store, which opened in 1910 in Ottumwa, IA.

The company describes its new incarnation as:

"Deeply inspired by the old 'campus shops' that used to exist in nearly every college town across America and will focus on that traditional 'natural shoulder' or 'Ivy League' way of dressing with a lively, spirited, and fresh take that honors the past while being wearable in the present. Our maxim: Old Ivy For Modern Times."

Poling recently wrote about his design philosophy on The Adventures of a Tartanscot a blog run by interior designer/stylist Scot Meacham Wood. After attending the Ivy Style exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Poling wrote:

"The "Ivy League" or, as it was also called, the 'Natural Shoulder style is the quintessential American style. Casual in its formality, formal in its casualness, it is a style that broke the rules and broke with the past (much as America itself did) to create an entirely new style, born on the elite campuses, but democratically available to all."

H.L. Poling & Sons appears on the November Old Georgetown Board draft agenda. The new store's sign scheme, replacement doors and light fixtures are up for concept review.

Patch hopes to speak with the owners to provide more details about Georgetown's newest haberdashery.
