The surrounding blocks of Wisconsin Ave. were closed in the late afternoon into the early evening on Thanksgiving day.
Fire and EMS personnel examined the property for the source of the problem.
The front windows shattered because of the force of the explosion.

As the cause of the building collapse at 1424 Wisconsin Ave. is still under investigation, images taken by D.C. Fire and EMS personnel with access to the scene show the true extent of the damage to both 1424 and neighboring buildings. D.C. Fire and EMS and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department responded to a reported building explosion on Thanksgiving day; one structure was condemned.

The rear of the building completely collapsed and the images show the impact on the neigboring building whose wall collapsed partially as well.

Editor's Note: We originally reported that the pictures featured 1422 Wisconsin Ave., but most of the damage and the collapse happened at 1424 Wisconsin Ave. The article has been updated to reflect these changes.
