Nike Ribbon Cutting Today
The new Nike store in Georgetown is located at 3040 M St. NW, Washington, D.C.
Nike will officially open the doors to its ninth U.S. flagship store — the first in the Washington, DC region—Thursday at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting and a special appearance by former Georgetown Men’s Hoyas Basketball Head Coach, John Thompson Jr.
The store has a strong focus on women and local sports teams. Thompson is not only appearing at opening day, but he is "commemorated inside the store through a custom wall display," according to a press release. And the store will feature an exclusive women’s run club and custom sports bra fittings among other services tailored to female athletes.

The three-story, 29,000-square-foot Nike store takes over the former Barnes and Noble Space. Replacing the familiar green coloring associated with the book store chain is a giant orange swoosh on the building at 3040 M St. NW at the corner of M and Thomas Jefferson Streets.
If the early morning activities do not quite jive with your schedule, there will also be events opening night. Starting at 6 p.m. the new store will offer "a Nike Training Club with Nike Master Trainer Marie Purvis, Nike+ Run Club 5K run, and a Q&A with Nike athletes," according to a press release.

Good for Nike. Sad for Georgetown. I hardly ever go to Georgetown anymore since B and N closed. Nike apparel will likely not get me there much. Any word on a new bookstore?

Amen! I live in Georgetown, a five minute walk from the store. I will NEVER patronize it. Barnes and Noble is missed. I was the last customers on its final day. I will never go through those doors again. It brought community together. The Nike store will probably bring crime!

I feel the same. The landlord raised the rent and B&N did the right thing and left. Having yet another sports store is Georgetown is overkill. Georgetown needs a book store like B&N. It brought folks together to talk and enjoy browsing books and magazines. And the joy of a cup of coffee and good friends. Now we got more tennis shoes and athletic gear. Culture? Think not. There goes the neighborhood.

Since my beloved Barnes and Noble was pushed out by Nike, I will now only wear Adidas or something other than Nike. This is the worst thing for Georgetown. This would have a better store for Chinatown not Georgetown. So sad! I will never patronize you, Nike. I miss B&N!!!!!

Thanks for your honest and heartfelt response, Ellen. No word, Steve, on a new bookstore. There's still Bridge Street Books, but it doesn't have the sort of space that B&N offered. -Shaun
