Patch Picks: 5 Nonprofits Making a Difference

Here are a few of the nonprofit organizations that make life better in Georgetown.

Volunteer organizations make a huge impact on the livelihood of the Georgetown community. Here are some of the nonprofit organizations that have made their mark in Georgetown:

  • Georgetown Ministry Center. The center's goal is to find long-term solutions for the homeless. Recently, GMC participated in the Point in Time Enumeration, which aids the country in understanding population size and demographics of the homeless. There are a variety of opportunities to volunteer from organizing shelter dinners to volunteering overnight at a shelter.
  • . The Frank R. Jelleff Branch of the Boys & Girls Club tackles issues affecting the area such as: lack of arts programming, juvenile crime and childhood obesity. The clubhouse provides a number of after-school activities and club opportunities for children and teens in the area. There are many opportunitys available to volunteer and become a role model.
  • Washington Humane Society. The society helps thousands of abused, abandoned and neglected animals in the D.C. area. Its success depends upon its volunteers. They are an open-access shelter in D.C., so WHS always needs volunteers, who can assist with adoptions, educate elementary schoolchildren, aid the veterinary staff, work at fundraising events, or a number of other areas.
  • Martha's Table. The organization's mission is to "help at-risk children, youth, families and individuals in our community improve their lives by providing educational programs, food, clothing, and enrichment opportunities.” Martha's Table provides recreation, family support services, tutoring and meals 365 days a year. Volunteers are essential for their success.
  • . The Ward Circle-Georgetown Meals on Wheels delivers pre-packaged meals to individuals in need so that they do not have to leave their homes. For those that drive, this is a great opportunity to utilize those vehicles and help to deliver meals and visit someone in need.
