Police Discuss Halloween Shooting at ANC Meeting

The shooting is being investigated as a potential homicide

The young man who was in Georgetown is currently in grave condition at George Washington University hospital, police confirmed to ANC2E commissioners and the public at the commission's regular meeting on Tuesday night.

Capt. Jeffrey Herold of the Metropolitan Police Department said police officers were stationed on nearly every corner in Georgetown on Halloween. Unrelated to the shooting, three robbery arrests were made and three firearms, including a sawed-off shotgun, were recovered for people throughout the course of the evening.

The homicide unit is currently investigating the shooting that occurred on the 2800 block of M Street.

Herold, who has helped patrol the Georgetown area for the past 22 Halloweens, said other areas of the city were completely dead on Monday night. "It was a little bit more dramatic (in Georgetown) than any other Halloween I've seen," he said.

Herold also added he expects the investigation to wrap within two days.

U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen, who participated in a community dialogue at the meeting, said gang activity is not suspected at this point. When the police conclude their investigation, Machen said he anticipates prosecuting the crime severely, even if the suspected shooter is a teenager.

"If you commit an adult crime, you're going to do adult time," Machen said.

In other business, the ANC discussed the expansion of the on P Street and future of the former West Power Plant at the intersection of K Street and 29th Street. No action was taken on either item.
