Possible Sabotage of Verizon Equipment in Georgetown

Many Verizon employees are currently on strike.

Verizon Communications Inc. is reporting at least 18 incidents of possible sabotage of its equipment by striking workers in the District of Columbia, including several in Georgetown.

As a result, service has been interrupted at some locations, though numbers on how many customers have lost phone, TV or computer service were not immediately available.

All told, the company has tallied about 30 instances of possible sabotage in the metro D.C. area with most of them taking place in the District in Georgetown, the DuPont Circle area and Woodley Park, according to Verizon officials.

The FBI reportedly is investigating more than 100 instances of wire cutting and slicing cables to distribution boxes throughout the Mid-Atlantic region since 45,000 members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the Communication Workers of America (CWA) at midnight on Saturday, Aug. 6.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier sent out a bulletin to D.C. residents over the weekend asking them to be alert for possible vandalism and to report people carrying an axe or cutting instrument of any type.

Verizon is offering rewards of up to $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of those who cut company cables or those who cause physical injury to company workers and contractors.

Police officials noted that there should be a marked Verizon vehicle at any site where work is being carried out at telephone boxes and that orange cones should also be placed at the scene of legitimate work.
