Senator Percy Would be 'Oddly Humbled' by Plaza in His Name

Sen. Charles Percy (R-Ill.) was instrumental in building support and securing funding for a Georgetown Waterfront Park.

Family of the late Senator Charles Percy (R-Ill.) and supporters of the Georgetown Waterfront Park gathered Thursday afternoon to dedicate a portion of the new waterfront park as “Senator Charles H. Percy Plaza”.

"My dad would be oddly humbled," said his daughter, Sharon Percy Rockefeller. As she introduced her grandchildren, who had just been doing cartwheels on a grassy area of the plaza, she added, "He would be incredibly happy and proud."

The senator was a strong supporter of the creation of a waterfront park in Georgetown. The plaza, now in his name, is at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and K Street, NW where the large sprinkler-style fountain is located.

"The Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park know without the impetus and leadership provided by Senator Percy to get this park built, we would not be standing in front of this wonderful fountain today with the kids frolicking around," said Bob vom Eigen, president of Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park.

Allen Lew, DC's city administrator, presented the same signage that was going on the sign post under Whitehurst Freeway to the family.

"His legacy is really being celebrated here," said Lew.

Several generations of Percy's and Rockefellers gathered to remove the cover and reveal the new sign for Senator Charles H. Percy Plaza.
