STREET LEVEL: The Writing on the Wall (Or Door)

When serious and humorous converge in Georgetown

People do not think of Georgetown as being quirky, but there are moments when it is funny, intentionally or not!

Clearly the staff and management at Baked and Wired are quirky and signal this trait openly on their sandwich board out front.

The residents near the Georgetown Cupcake customer line on 33rd Street are turning an annoyance into a quip.

And the sign for the new store, Jack Willis, on Wisconsin between M Street and K is having a bit of fun at its own expense.

But how do we interpret the interesting sign at the Georgetown Spice and Tea Exchange on Wisconsin Avenue between M and K Streets?  Curries as housewarming gifts? And is "Lavish Bay" truly a sports store in Miami, NYC and DC?

A by-passer coyly draped a mundane parking sign with a lady's pump but how do you explain the handmade snowman on a window on 35th street?

And, finally, is the Lutheran Church of Georgetown really a wildlife refuge?

About this column: Being at street level means you can see all the comings and goings and changes that combine to give the Georgetown neighborhood its character and village feel. After all, the constant of Georgetown retail is change.
