Stroll Down the Streets of Paris at Georgetown's French Market

Have you ever wanted to walk down the streets of France but don't want the hassel of booking a flight? You can have a taste of Paris at Georgetown's French market.

The eighth annual open-air Georgetown French Market returns to the Book Hill neighborhood Friday April 29 and Saturday April 30. The Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) hosts the annual event.

From 10 a.m. to 5 pm the streets of upper Wisconsin Avenue from P Street to Reservoir Road will be transformed into an authentic European marketplace with live music and entertainment for all ages.

For many this means two days of unbeatable deals on everything from the latest designer clothing, antique furnishings, and delectable treats from the 30 plus shops and vendors that are participating.

"There's something for everyone," says Pat Poupon, co-owner of and one of the shops participating in the French Market.

“It’s a little bit like a treasure chest,” explains Sara Cannova, owner of when asked about the French Market.

"Everybody puts out great stuff. When you see the colors and all the things for sale you get hooked," says Poupon. 

Canonova agrees, “there are deals a-plenty to be had.”

Sassanova will be selling a number of accessories and shoes for kids and adults in all sizes and price ranges. These shoes have been set aside just for the market.

“It’s a bit of a hodgepodge of shoes. We dig deep and take everything we have and put it out there,” explains Cannova. Customers have a chance to get 80 percent off of their purchase.

Patisserie Poupon will be grilling some of their popular merguez sausages along with baking some tasty pastries including gateau Breton, a special treat from Brittany that is a cross between shortbread and pound cake, and kouign amann, bread in which the dough is layered with sugar and butter.

They will be having a giveaway with prizes including a glass tea set from Bonjour Company, a specialty box of teas from Illy, a certificate for lunch for two at Patisserie Poupon, and a gift certificate for $30 at Patisserie Poupon.

Importing company French Connections will also give away a tea towel in the drawing and will be selling tablecloths, fabric, place mats, and tea towels.

“There may also be a surprise item available for lunch,” says Poupon. Hint: it will be a local specialty, more than likely.

Though France and England have a complicated relationship history, many Georgetown shops will also be celebrating the royal wedding.

will show the Royal Wedding and serve tea and English treats throughout the day, and Patisserie Poupon will be serving scones and English tea on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they do the drawing for the prizes.

To raise money for The Friends of Book Hill Park, custom Georgetown French Market tote bags are available now to purchase for $2 at participating Georgetown stores. The bags will also be sold at event and all proceeds will benefit the organization.

If you're out and about Saturday, make sure you bring the family to the and then hit up the Georgetown House Tour. The Rose Park event features pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting and live music. The house tour offers a glimpse into up to 12 of the most impressive homes in Georgetown.
