Surf Report: Must-See D.C. Websites

FamousDC's "Outside DC" and Greater Greater Washington's look at the effect of subway maps on people's perceptions.

Looking to kill a few minutes at work? Here is Patch's weekly round-up of must-see Internet destinations — many of which are geared specifically to Georgetown residents.

  • FamousDC started a new blog feature called Outside DC, to honor places other than the Nation's Capital that are the hometowns of DC people. This entry is Kansas City. (And while you're at FamousDC, check out Remy's new video, Do the TSA Hokey Pokey.)
  • If you like the Capitol Steps — Washington's musical comedy troupe of former congressional staffers turned political satirists — you're in luck. Head on over to the Capitol Steps' website for a schedule of live performances, as well as free downloads of some of the group's songs. If you can't make it to a show or aren't familiar with the Capitol Steps, you can also take a look at clips from live performances on its YouTube page.
  • Greater, Greater Washington examines the effect subway maps have on people's perceptions, pointing out the conflict between keeping a map simple and keeping it accurate. The site is holding a Redesign the Metro Map contest; voting is closed and the winners will be announced next week, but in the meantime, feel free to have a look at the various entries. If anything, it shows how many different ways a transit system can be interpreted.
  • Into hula hoops? Hula Hooping in DC, MD and VA has information on upcoming hula-hooping events, as well as performers, teachers and more.
  • If you live in or near Trinidad (the one on D.C., that is), then you might like Frozen Tropics, a blog dedicated to exploring the area.
