Watergate Exxon Closed, for Now

The owner says the closure is for renovations and is not permanent.

The Watergate Exxon gas station, known for its very high gas prices, appeared to be shuttered Friday. But The Washington City Paper reports that the closure is temporary.

The Washington Post's John Kelly was the first local media outlet to report that the gas station appeared to be closed Friday afternoon.

According to the City Paper, owner Joe Mamo said the station was closed for "renovations."

Earlier this year, Kelly wrote about the infamously expensive gas station, explaining that the high prices seem to be the result of an ongoing disagreement between Mamo, who owns the station and Roland Joun, who operates it.

Joun was at the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting in September because he was hoping to operate the Wisconsin Avenue station that had a fire almost two years ago. In September, Joun told the Georgetown community he planned to re-open it as a Shell station within two months' time.

But so far the gas station at Wisconsin Avenue and Q Street remains shuttered, much like the Exxon on Rock Creek at Virginia Avenue.
