What Should Replace La Madeleine?

A March 13 note on La Madeleine's window notified the restaurant of the termination of its lease and its eviction from 3000 M St. NW.

Let's call this a modern spin on community planning—Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table.

From time to time we'll present a new vacant building and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules and all the other zoning jargon. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community?

La Madeleine closed indefinitely in July due to water damage, which also impacted the Latham Hotel and Michel Richard Citronelle, all located at 3000 M St., NW.

A letter posted on the cafe window, dated March 11, notified La Madeleine that the terms of its lease had expired:

"Please contact us at your earliest convenience to arrange for the removal of any Tenant's fixture or items of personal property which may remain in the demised premises. Thank you for your prior tenancy in this property and best wishes in regards to future endeavors," signed Harte IHR Latham, L.P.

So, La Madeleine is out at 3000 M St. NW.

What would you like to see in La Madeleine's place? Another cafe? A wine bar? A bakery?
