Commuters in DC are paying $3.75 per gallon right now—lower than last year, but higher than earlier this spring.
Heading out of town for Memorial Day this weekend? You'll be paying less at the pump than you did last year even though the DC metro area has seen prices spike in recent weeks. Average gas prices in DC this week are $3.75 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas, down from $3.81 a gallon a year ago, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. Paying $3.75 a gallon at the pump is better than what many Minnesotans are paying right now—an average of $4.27 a gallon, the highest prices in the country, according to the Star Tribune. Currently, DC's retail average is 10-cents higher than the national average ($3.65). Some analysts think there may be a slight drop ahead, with mid-summer street prices averaging $3.20 to $3.40. Wednesday 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross’ Oklahoma chapters to help with tornado relief efforts.
A Georgetown business is offering its own contribution to Oklahoma tornado relief efforts: 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of Red Cross Red Velvet Cupcakes at Sprinkles will go to the Red Cross’ Oklahoma chapters. A massive tornado, estimated at two-miles wide by some reports, ripped through Moore, Okla., a suburb of Oklahoma City Monday afternoon. Authorities have since confirmed 24 deaths, including several school children. DC Mayor Vincent Gray offered condolences and support to the tornado victims in a press release Tuesday. "District residents who want to help should donate to reputable disaster-relief organizations, such as the American Red Cross, which are now mobilizing teams to assist both residents and first responders …

The sandwich franchise will be opening in the former Provideo space.
Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches is coming to Glover Park, taking over the space at 2428 Wisconsin Ave. NW, the former Provideo space. Most recently Custom TV Solutions called the space home. Jimmy Johns, a sandwich franchise, recently expanded to the District with a location downtown near McPherson Square and locations in the nearby suburbs, including Crystal City, Va. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner first tweeted the news Monday and Hyperlocal Glover Park was the first to report it. The company website does not mention a Glover Park location, but a post on Craigslist in April indicated the company was hiring assistant managers for a Glover Park location. Additionally, there have been several recent reviews and permit requests filed …

Landlords Barbara and Gail Bassin remind the community that the Rocklands Barbeque had no say in the decision to end Max's Best Ice Cream's lease.
Barbara and Gail Bassin, the landlords at the center of controversy that has pit customers of one local small businesses against another small business, stand by their decision to end Max's Best Ice Cream's lease at 2416 Wisconsin Ave. NW and offer that space to neighboring Rocklands Barbeque at 2618 Wisconsin Ave. NW. "As landlords and owners we feel comfortable with our decision to consolidate the two spaces and offer a friendly locally owned restaurant an environment where families and friends can come together in Glover Park twelve months of the year," they wrote in a prepared statement. Until now the Bassins have been mum about their decision, which has left Rocklands to take much of the heat from community members upset over the …

Rocklands reported several incidents with community members angry over lease dispute.
After several weeks of silence, the landlords behind the Max's Ice Cream lease termination hubbub will make a public statement about their properties in Glover Park, according to Washingtonian. Max's Best Ice Cream, a popular local ice cream store, was notified last month that its lease would be terminated after 20 years at the same location, 2416 Wisconsin Ave. NW. Neighboring small business, Rocklands Barbeque, 2418 Wisconsin Ave. NW, announced that it would be taking over Max's space to expand its footprint in Glover Park. On a recent Friday afternoon, a group of Stoddert Elementary students rallied outside Max's store with signs. They chanted "Ho, Ho, Hey, Hey, Max's Best has got to stay" and "What do we want? Max's Best! When do we…
