Special Election: Race for Signatures is On

Candidates need valid signatures from 3,000 District voters by Jan. 23 to appear on the April 23 ballot.

The 15 people who have picked up nominating petitions have until Jan. 23 to get enough signatures so their names appear on the April 23 special election ballot for the At-Large seat on the District Council. The election will fill the seat vacated by Phil Mendelson when he became Council Chairman in November. In December, Anita Bonds, chairwoman of the DC Democratic State Committee, was selected to serve as the interim at-large councilmember. In addition to Bonds, the list of potential candidates includes some familiar names from recent races, including A.J. Cooper, Patrick Mara, and Michael A. Brown. Cooper ran in the fall at-large race, which independent David Grosso won in November. Patrick Mara ran in last spring's special election, …

Anita Bonds to Serve as Interim At-large Member of DC Council

The DC Democratic State Committee selected Bonds, the party’s chairwoman.

Anita Bonds was selected by the DC Democratic State Committee, of which she is the chairwoman, to serve as the interim at-large councilmember until a special election April 23. The seat was vacated by Phil Mendelson when he officially became the council chairman in November. Bonds was an aide to former mayor and current councilman, Marion Barry. As the Washington City Paper reports: "The selection of Bonds, who works for Fort Myer Construction, means two of the Council's 13 members work for contractors that do significant business with the city; At-Large Councilmember David Catania works for M.C. Dean. Both outside jobs are entirely legal under the District's ethics rules." Candidates for the April primary could pick up nominating …

Prindiville said he was glad to see such strong results at the end of his seven-month campaign to be one of two Georgetown students serving on the ANC. "Student voters are happy with the results. Ethics Charter Amendments are 'a Start'

District voters passed three ethics charter amendments that may have some holes.

District of Columbia voters approved three charter amendments on ethics reform that may do little to remedy the ethics of D.C. politics, though some say “It’s a start.”  Get the latest local news in your inbox with our free daily email newsletter. Charter Amendment V allows for the city council to vote on the removal of a member exhibiting “gross misconduct.” Charters VI and VII call for lifetime resignation from current position for a council member or mayor convicted of a felony while holding office. The amendments were written by the council in response to recent federal investigations of former Councilmen Kwame Brown and Harry Thomas, Jr. regarding campaign finance violations and Mayor Vincent Gray's "shadow campaign" concerning a $653…

Georgetown Students Secure Seats on ANC

Peter Prindiville appeared on the ballot and Craig Cassey, Jr. ran a write-in campaign.

Two Georgetown University students were elected Tuesday to serve on the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) for a two-year term starting in January. Redistricting earlier this year created a second student ANC district; on the current commission there is just one student, Jake Sticka. Junior Peter Prindiville's name appeared on the ballot for ANC2E08, a student voting District. Unofficial results that do not include the many provisional ballots cast by Georgetown students Tuesday, show Prindiville securing his seat with 61 votes. Sophomore Craig Cassey was unable to gather enough signatures to appear on the ballot prior to the deadline, so he ran a write-in campaign for ANC2E04, which is made up of Georgetown University student housing…

The at-large race for the two District council seats was the most contested local race for Georgetown voters.

Updated 2:05 p.m. Nov. 7 David Grosso (I) ousted incumbent Councilman Michael Brown (I) from his seat on the District Council and incumbent Vincent Orange (D) hung on to his seat, which he won in a special election. In the West Village and Glover Park, the candidate with the second most votes was Orange, but in the East Village Republican Mary Brooks Beatty (R) garnered more support than Orange. In an email to supporters sent Wednesday, Gross wrote: "This election shows that the time is now for a new day in D.C. politics.  Voters have made a statement that they are ready for D.C. to move forward to the next level…

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …
