Mara Takes Georgetown, Glover Park, Bonds Wins DC

Anita Bonds wins the night and the DC Charter Amendment passes.

Georgetown and Glover Park voters favored Republican Patrick Mara, followed closely by Democrat Elissa Silverman in the special election, but interim Councilwoman Anita Bonds, also a Democrat, won the night in DC. Less than 10 percent of registered voters voted in the election, according to unofficial numbers. Bonds won in unofficial results with 32.19 percent of the District-wide vote, followed closely by Silverman with 27.55 percent and Mara with 22.79 percent. There were seven candidates on the ballot, six of whom were eligible for votes once Michael Brown bowed out. Turn out was low at three precincts in Northwest DC Tuesday morning.

Turnout was low Tuesday morning in Georgetown and Glover Park for the special election for the At-large seat on the District Council. The election will fill the seat vacated when Councilman Phil Mendelson became Council Chairman. There are seven candidates are on the ballot for the At-Large Member of the Council contest, but only six of those candidates are eigible because candidate Michael A. Brown withdrew his candidacy earlier this month. There were no lines at any of the three precincts Patch visited Tuesday morning. At most precincts there were more volunteers for campaigns than there were voters. Mara Secures Most Donations from Georgetown

At-large DC Council candidate Patrick Mara snags the most monetary donations from Georgetown individuals and corporations.

Georgetown corporations and individuals are throwing their monetary support  behind DC Council at-large candidate Patrick Mara, according to the campaign finance reports from the Board of Elections and Ethics. “I have a lot of friends in Georgetown,” Mara told Patch. “I call, I’ve gone door to door…I’ve just been hauling around the city asking for donations.” Mara is one of six candidates running for the At-large seat on the District Council in a special election April 23. The seat was officially vacated by Phil Mendelson when he was elected Council Chairman in November. Education, Parking and Zoning Dominate Georgetown Candidate Forum

Four of the seven candidates for the At-large seat on the District Council attended a forum in Georgetown Monday.

The race for the At-large seat on the District Council brought out four of the then seven candidates to Georgetown Monday to explain their (at times quite nuanced) differences on hot issues like parking, zoning and education. The special election April 23 will fill the At-large seat vacated by Phil Mendelson when he became the Council Chairman in November. Anita Bonds was selected in the interim to the position in December by the DC Democratic State Committee, of which she was the chairwoman at the time. Jack Evans Backs Anita Bonds in April Special Election

The April 23 special election will fill the At-large seat on the District Council vacated by now Chairman Phil Mendelson.

Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans has endorsed Anita Bonds for the At-large seat on the DC Council, The Washington Post reports. Bonds is serving as the interim At-large councilwoman prior to the special election to permanently fill the seat on April 23. Evans told The Washington Post that Bonds is “best for the job." A media advisory from Bonds' office quotes a prepared statement from Evans in which he describes her as "tough but diplomatic, a doer not a talker." The seat was vacated when Phil Mendelson became the Council Chairman and Bonds was appointed to the position in December by the DC Democratic State Committee, of which she was the chairwoman at the time. Virginia GOP Voter ID Law: Voter Suppression?

Republicans say a requirement for picture ID protects "sanctity" of the vote; Democrats argue the GOP is keeping certain voters away from the polls on purpose.

Virginia voters will need a photo ID when they're heading to the polls beginning in 2014 under new requirements signed into law by Gov. Bob McDonnell this week. Supporters argue that a voter registration card with no picture creates an opening for fraudulent voting. McDonnell spokesman Jeff Caldwell said in a statement to The Washington Post that the new law is about protecting "the sanctity of our democratic process.”  Democratic leaders have challenged voter ID laws as a type of voter suppression. They note those without a photo ID are likely found among Democratic voters, particularly seniors and college students. The new law will need approval by the U.S. Justice Department, a requirement for any voting changes in most Southern states …

you have to qualify to register but once you do provide the required information why not receive a photo ID - just like you do when you get a drivers license? If we want to require photo-id, fine - provide one when you register to vote....
