Blessing of the Animals

Dumbarton United Methodist Church, 3133 Dumbarton St NW, Washington, DC | Get Directions »

Dumbarton United Methodist Church will conduct “a blessing of the animals” on the front steps of the church. The Rev. Mary Kay Totty says it’s not necessary to bring a pet. People can bring pictures of their pets to be blessed. Or even stuffed animals. Oct. 8 was chosen for the blessing because it is close to Oct. 4, St. Francis Day, in honor of the Patron Saint of Animals. The church conducted its first blessing of the animals last year, and it was covered by Patch: http://georgetown.patch.com/articles/rescued-animals-blessed-at-dumbarton-united-methodist-church

The church is located at 3133 Dumbarton Ave. NW, Washington, D.C.

Dumbarton United Methodist Church, currently led by Rev. Mary Kay Totty, was originally founded in 1772. It moved to its current site in 1850. The Romanesque design features purple front doors topped by round stained-glass windows, and two small gardens frame the stairs at the church entrance.

Dumbarton was the first Methodist church in Washington, DC, to commit to conducting ceremonies for same-sex couples after a law was passed allowing such marriages in March 2010.
