Lessons from Whole Foods

Why do some people act as if the world revolves around them, then act surprised when it doesn't?

"Is it sushi grade?" the woman kept asking.

She cut in front of me, but I let it go.

She was tall, blond, and uptight. We all know the type.

I'm not sure why she thought that the men working behind the counter at Whole Foods would change their answer the third time she asked.

If you've ever been to the Glover Park Whole Foods; you know that the men working at the fish counter are kind, knowledgeable, and always smiling. Plus, several of them have lovely African French accents. It makes it a little easier to pay so much money for a piece of salmon (or sushi grade tuna as it were).

I don't know how it happened, but at some point, it seemed both men behind the counter were helping me.

The tall blond was getting annoyed, and asked, "Uh, are you both helping her?"

As if to say, are you both helping that scrappy little brunette instead of me?

It wasn't worth the effort to reply that she should chill out and be a little nicer to the fish guys. Instead, I informed her with a smile and the flare of a sitcom actress, "Yes. Everybody is helping me!"

The men behind the counter grinned.

They apologized, and one of them helped her, but not with their usual enthusiasm.

As I took my package, the Whole Foods employee winked at me. Not a flirty or a creepy wink, but a gesture of appreciation for reciprocating his kindness. A wink that said, we can make each others lives so much more tolerable, can't we?
