After The First Snow: Closures, Delays and Safety
Information that could affect your Monday schedule.
The snow has stopped falling and the National Weather Service has lifted its winter storm warning, previously set until 10 a.m. Monday. But the rain, ice and more snow to come have still shaken up the regular Monday routine.
Here are the latest notifications:
- All D.C. Public Schools, including Stoddert Elementary, will open two hours late.
Several private schools, such as Edmund Burke, are also closed or delayed. Check with your individual school for its schedule.
- The District of Columbia Government is operating on a two-hour delay.
If you work for the city government, were going to contact the mayor or contest a parking ticket, sleep in a little longer. The public library will also be closed until 11:30 a.m.
- Roads are slick with fallen leaves and ice. What to expect from your commute.
- The Department of Health and Safety reports a continued hypothermia alert.
- The DC Snow Team deployed more than 200 plows. If you are concerned that your street was missed, a map of the snow plow locations around Georgetown can be found here.
The Department of Public Works called Sunday's freezing rain "the most dangerous winter condition there is." The department offers these tips:
If you must go out, travel cautiously. Assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for plow drivers’ safety, “Don’t crowd the plow.” Residents are encouraged to go to snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after winter storms, and for tips to get one’s home and family prepared for inclement weather. Residents also may sign up at alert.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.
