Lent begins a 40-day period of penitence and observation prior to the Christian celebration of Easter.

Lent will begin on Feb. 22 this year, with Christians around the world fasting and receiving ashes on their foreheads. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day penitential Lenten season before the Christian holiday of Easter.

The practice of applying ashes is an ancient one, found in the Old Testament, according to a press release from the Archdiocese of Washington.
