Burleith Forms Safety Committee

The Burleith Citizens Association has formed a safety committee to organize citizens and concerns over crime.

The Burleith Citizens Association (BCA) will host its first Safety Committee meeting tonight. The neighborhood organization plans to work with ANC Commissioner Ed Solomon, the commission's safety chair, and MPD to address increasing concerns over crime in the community.

In a note on the community list serve, the BCA advised neighbors, "there has been an increase in crime in the Burleith and Georgetown areas in the last couple of weeks. To that end, the BCA is recommending you be aware of your surroundings and call 911 if there is anything suspicious or out of the ordinary in the neighborhood."

The primary concerns have been several recent crimes involving weapons, including guns. A robbery at 38th and R Streets on March 10 just before 3 p.m. involved a gun. Three days later just before 6 p.m. on the 3000 block of Cambridge Place a victim was robbed at gun point by a black male suspect wearing a red bandana covering the lower portion of his face. Additional robberies, thefts and assaults with a dangerous weapon were also reported in the Georgetown and Burleith neighborhoods in the past few weeks.
