Eating For a Cause: The 2013 Taste of Georgetown is June 1

Thousands of people will fill the streets of Georgetown for this popular fundraising event.

Looking for a way to try signature dishes from Georgetown's top restaurants, all in one place?  An epicurean's dream, the 20th Annual Taste of Georgetown will be held June 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"This is a really fun thing to do, it is a chance to taste a lot of different foods and there is something for everyone," said Gunther Stern, Executive Director of the Georgetown Ministry Center, which is the beneficiary of the event.

The event, with expected attendance of over 12,000 people, will be held on Wisconsin Avenue between M and K Streets and features over 25 restaurants.  All of the proceeds will be donated to the Georgetown Ministry Center, which serves as a facility providing homeless outreach programs.

Other events include face painting, balloon sculptures and live jazz music provided by Blues Alley.

New this year, several of Georgetown's chefs will face off in an Iron Chef-style competition judged by DC's top food experts and media.

The Taste of Georgetown started two decades ago as a Grace Episcopal Church project that raised money for the Georgetown Ministry Center.  In 2004, the Georgetown Business Improvement District came in to help plan and organize the event, which has since grown tremendously to now raising as much as $27,000 last year.

"This is a significant amount of money to help meet the Center's financial needs," Stern said.

The Georgetown Ministry Center operates seven days a week to serve the homeless and mentally ill.  They offer a place for people to come and wash their clothes, have access to a phone and computer and receive psychiatric and physical health services.

"This is the one time of the year that Wisconsin Avenue gets blocked off for a party, I encourage people to come and check it out," Stern added.

Tasting tickets are $5 each or five tastings for $20.  Beverage tickets are $10 for 3 and $4 for 1 tasting.  Tickets may be purchased in advance by clicking here.
