Georgetown Construction Set for John R. Thompson Jr. Center

Groundbreaking scheduled for summer.

Construction is set to begin for Georgetown's John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletics Center this summer.

Georgetown President John J. DeGioia announced that the new building will be named for the Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach who led the Hoyas for 27 years.

Thompson compiled 596 wins, capturing 13 BIG EAST Championships, seven regular season titles, six tournament championships, 24 consecutive invitations to postseason play, three NCAA Final Fours appearances, and the NCAA National Championship in 1984.

"Off the court, he prepared his players for a life after basketball." DeGioia said in a statement.  "He inspired his players to pursue academic excellence, ending his tenure with a 97 percent graduation rate among his players, with dozens of them finding success off of the basketball court.

"He was famous for keeping a deflated basketball on his desk, reminding students that the game wouldn’t last forever, ensuring the sum total of their life is not eight pounds of air in a basketball.”
