Georgetown Resident Jack Evans to Run for Mayor

Evans is expected to throw his hat in the ring Saturday June 8 for the 2014 mayoral race.

Evans joins Councilwoman Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) and Councilman Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) to bring the total candidate count to three; Mayor Vincent Gray has not announced if he plans to run for re-election.

Evans is a long-time Georgetown resident who now lives on P Street in the East Village with his wife and six children. He was first elected to the council through a special election in 1991 and previously ran for mayor in 1998.

In the 2012 election, Evans ran unchallenged after an early opponent, Fiona Greig, dropped out of the race less than two weeks after she first declared.

Greig decided not to run following revelations about an embarrassing list of fundraiser targets accidentally filed with the city's Office of Campaign Finance that identified one potential donor as "homosexual" and another as "super wealthy."

When Greig stepped out of the race, her campaign chair, against her. Evans' campaign denied such allegations and Archer later publicly endorsed Evans.

According to a Tweet from NBC4's Tom Sherwood, Evans will announce his candidacy at 10 a.m. at new 14th Street restaurant and bar Le Diplomate at 14th and Q Streets NW.
