Metrorail Update: Getting Home After The Big 2014 New Year Celebration

Where to get a ride back to Georgetown after midnight.

New Year's Eve falls on a weekday evening this year, meaning it's weekday schedules for public transportation. So after you've rung in the New Year, how do you get home?

The Metrorail will extend its hours until 2 a.m. on New Year's Eve, but getting home to Georgetown via train still means walking a mile in the cold in the middle of the night.

If you've been drinking and figuring out buses is just too much, you can call SoberRide for a free cab ride home within $30 worth of fare.

For those who prefer to bus it, the DC Circulator stops all lines at midnight or earlier on weekdays and the 31 bus from Friendship Heights to Potomac Park will not run late.

But there are still a few buses that will make trips to Georgetown after midnight. You can find the routes and timetables here.

  • The 32 and 36 buses from Friendship Heights through downtown to Naylor Road will operate after midnight from about 1 a.m. to about 3:30 a.m.

  • The 38B bus from Farragut to Ballston will run to Georgetown until about 1:30 a.m, as will the D1 and D2 buses from Glover Park to Federal Triangle and the D5 and D6 buses from Maryland to Stadium-Armory.

  • The G2 from Howard University to Georgetown University will stop in Georgetown at 12:49 a.m.

Both the Metro rail and buses will run on Sunday schedules on New Year's Day. Metro stations will open at 7 a.m.

With transportation all worked out, here are the New Year's schedules for other important city functions:

All DC Public Schools are closed until Jan. 2.

The DMV will be closed on New Year's Day.

The DC Public Library will close at 5:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve and will be closed for New Year's Day.

DC government offices will operate as usual on Tuesday but will be closed for New Year's Day.
