GU Big Student Pack-Up Days are May 12, May 20

Students can donate gently-used goods through Georgetown's MoveOut Drive.

As the spring semester winds down, students begin the annual task of packing up their belongings and heading home for the summer. Georgetown University is organizing several efforts to reduce the amount of waste created during pack-up days.

Again this year the Georgetown University MoveOut Drive and its team of 150 volunteers will collect donations at 10 residence halls across campus between now and May 20. To accommodate students living off-campus, volunteers will pick up donations at student homes on 10 collection dates.

The effort last year yielded more than 16 full moving trucks worth of donated goods, ranging from furniture to clothing to school supplies, according to Georgetown University spokesperson Rachel Pugh.

This year the MoveOut Drive is supported by the Sustainability Initiative, Planning and Facilities, the Center for Social Justice, Residence Life, Off Campus Student Life and Holy Trinity Church. Donated items go to local families in need.

For those items too large or too damaged to be donated, Georgetown will be making daily bulk trash pick ups now through May 31.

Students can sign up online for a pick up and they will receive either an orange or pink tag to attach to items placed curbside.

Tags were dropped off door-to-door last week in preparation for the big move out weekends—this weekend and next weekend.

"When we see the date and time they've signed up for, we will drop the tags off ahead of time," Pugh explained in an email to Patch.

On the day of a scheduled pick-up students place trash on the curb in front their off-campus homes between 9 and 10 a.m. and must attach an orange "Bulk Trash" tag provided by the university.

As an added service to the community, non-student neighbors can also sign up to have their bulk trash or donated items picked up. Fill out the form at: tinyurl.com/gumoveoutdrive2013.

Should neighbors notice trash or bulk items that are not picked up for several days, they may report the incident to Georgetown's Off Campus Student Life office at (202) 687-5138 and/or through DC 311.
