Even though Tropical Storm Karen fizzled this weekend, Northern Virginia could still see heavy rains and possibly thunderstorms Monday, according to several weather forecasts.

The weather could impact the evening commute home, even with fewer cars on the road due to the federal government shutdown.

A cold front moving into the region could "bring a period of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms. Rainfall amounts of 0.5-1.5 inches are possible, with the most likely period for rain between midday and around 10 p.m., says the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.

The National Weather Service says Northern Virginia has a 100 percent chance of showers Monday, with the chance of thunderstorms starting as early as 9 a.m. The NWS predicts three-quarters of an inch to an inch of rain is possible.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook, issued Sunday night, by theNational Weather Service states:

"A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL MOVE INTO THE MID ATLANTIC STATES MONDAY. THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR PERIODS FOR HEAVY RAINFALL MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING WITH LOCALIZED FLOODING...MAINLY IN URBAN LOCATIONS. AN ISOLATED TORNADO AND A FEW DAMAGING WINDS GUSTS ARE POSSIBLE WITH ANY THUNDERSTORMS THAT MAY DEVELOP."

According to The Weather Channel, clouds will start rolling in about midnight Sunday, with light showers possible Monday morning. The Weather Channel forecasts thunderstorms for the area between 1-4 p.m.

The cold front should cool off Northern Virginia, which saw unseasonably high temperatures, in the 80s, over the weekend. The high Monday is forecast to be 76 degrees, at about noon.

Tuesday through Thursday should be sunny with highs at about 70 degrees, according to The Weather Channel.
