Increased Threat of Wildfires Thursday in Virginia, DC

The National Weather Service said there was an 'enhanced threat' of wildfires.

Gusty winds and dry air could make for a dangerous combination Thursday afternoon in Virginia and Washington, D.C., according to the National Weather Service.

The threat of wildfires spreading is enhanced due to the low relative humidity, winds between 20 to 35 mph and low fuel moisture, the weather service reported.

As of 9:22 a.m., Dominion Power had more than 2,500 customers without power in Northern Virginia, most of those impacted were in Loudoun County.

A wind advisory is in effect until 11 a.m., and falling tree limbs, power outages and hazardous driving conditions are possible as a result of the wind.

Daytime temperatures around freezing will drop to the mid-twenties by Thursday evening, according to the weather service.

Around sunset, the winds will "quickly diminish," according to the National Weather Service, which said until then, there is an "enhanced threat for the spread of wildfires through this afternoon."

Friday should offer some warmth—the forecast shows highs in the mid-fifties.
