National Weather Service Issues Advisory For Friday Commute

What to expect during the drive.

Today was warmer compared to the "polar vortex" the region experienced earlier in the week, but with the Georgetown canal and the Potomac river still frozen over, winter is here to stay.

Despite warmer temperatures expected later this week, the national weather service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Friday.

NWS expects freezing rain from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m., which could make for a slick Friday-morning commute.

"Untreated services will be icy and slippery, particularly during the morning commute," a hazardous weather notice said. "Slow down and use caution."

The District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department has these tips for staying safe during hazardous driving conditions.

Temperatures will drop to between 20 and 30 degrees tonight, causing freezing rain as early as midnight and continuing through Friday morning. NWS predicts a 70 percent chance of freezing rain during the day.

By Friday afternoon, temperatures are expected to be in the high 30s and the rain will just be wet, according to NWS.

The weekend gets better with Saturday's temperatures in the 60s, but still rain, and a clear Sunday with temperatures in the 50s.

How long do you think the Potomac will stay frozen once it starts to rain? Take a guess in the comments.
